Counter Culture Trends
Growing up in a hardware store might not sound glamorous to the average female, but to me it was a way of life; I didn’t know anything else. I looked at it as a creative playground where I could help someone repair a screen, fix a squeaky door, or find the perfect paint color for their bedroom. Little did I know, this childhood experience was teaching me the basics of design, problem solving, and building relationships with people. That humble beginning started my love affair with the kitchen and bath industry and shaped my career path to work for both Kohler Co. and currently Cambria®, where I work with designers and builders daily.
Every year, like a kid waiting to open presents at Christmas, I can’t wait to go to the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS). It’s my Super Bowl; I can’t help it. The chance to see innovative products from the best manufacturers in our industry gives me goose bumps — and this year was spectacular! Wall-to-wall, the show was packed with inspiration: bold, saturated color on cabinets; using mixed metal accents on countertops; integrating full stone backsplashes; showcasing the beauty of black on black design; incorporating nature into the kitchen; and, of course, streamlining technology into your home.
Now the hard part. How to begin to share the endless inspiration, ideas and trends from the show with my designers and clients in Oklahoma? To start, here are three of my favorite designs that capture the spirit of the show in brilliantly designed spaces.
trend 01 - Metal Accents
Nothing gives a room an extra pop of glam like a metal accent. The sophistication of integrating a simple band of gold not only elevates the beauty of Cambria quartz, it also creates visual interest within the kitchen design. Paired with black hardware on black matte cabinets, a bold metal hood and ombre light fixtures and, voila, you’ve created the perfect recipe for a kitchen space your family and friends will envy!
Trend 02 - Geometry
Integrating a Cambria quartz backsplash creates a distinctive focal point in any space and is a hot trend for 2020. Cambria Harrogate naturally draws the eye into its black and dark greige veins that form geometric sections and compliment the clean lines of the cabinetry. The addition of two gorgeous, hanging circular mirrors creates balance in this sophisticated master bathroom.
Trend 03 - Patterns
Looking for a design that’s totally different? Brittanicca Block offers a captivating mosaic that features Cambria’s iconic Brittanicca design laid in parallel strips that create a unique and beautiful pattern. Think of a butcher block design made of quartz that can effortlessly be incorporated into countless applications. The look is chic and creates interest in any space. Design is everywhere, and I hope these inspirational trends from KBIS ignite your creative side and encourage you to work with the professionals in our industry!
