Design Speaks: Metal

A well-designed home has layers. It’s a simple statement and one upon which most design and construction industry leaders agree.  However, agreeing on what the layers are and how to use them is another story. It is my humble belief that successful design includes layers of color, shape, and texture. Few materials can offer you the same versatility and impact as metal when it comes to adding a layer of color, shape or texture.

I could go on for days talking about the different ways that you can successfully incorporate metal into your projects. But instead of just talking about them, I am going to share some resources (that are right at your fingertips) to help inspire you with ways to bring in those visual and tactile layers of design through the use of metal.

New York is an amazing design mecca, and it is there that we find so many influences in the use of rare materials from around the globe. None are more inspirational than the designs and products from Ikonni. For 30 years, Ikonni’s founder, Iko Aviv, has been bringing unique materials from Western Europe to the United States and transforming them into stunning surfaces. It wasn’t until early 2020 that these exquisite products became readily available to the Oklahoma market through a new distribution partnership with Wilshire Cabinet + Co in Oklahoma City.  Make an appointment with Wilshire Cabinet + Co to explore the incredible breadth of accent panel and texture options available. Envision adding a unique wall treatment to highlight a focal wall, covering the front of an island or wet bar, or creating a one-of-a-kind square range hood. The possibilities are endless, but it is clear that there are hundreds of options to incorporate some of these chic materials into your home.

In a relatively short amount of time, the artist fabricating team behind basik has earned a stellar reputation in Oklahoma. This talented group of Oklahoma artists opened their doors using the mantra “We build cool stuff for discerning clients.” And that they do! The visuals showcased on their website  prove that these guys can build anything—from completely custom steel doors, staircases and railings to commercial fixtures and furnishings.  Lending a contemporary feel, adding something bold and beautiful into your space can be a simple statement starter or the glue that binds your traditional bones with a modern aesthetic.

Kitchen range hoods are not an unexpected place for a metal element to live in your home.  What is unexpected are all the new design options and attention to detail that today’s finest all-metal range hoods can exude.  Family-owned Stoll Industries is now in their 3rd generation of quality-led craftsmanship and fine details that only a true large scale metal manufacturer can provide. The team at Wilshire Cabinet + Co can help you design your very own custom range hood, with every detail specific to you and your style.  Made in Abbeville, South Carolina (with installation and service here in Oklahoma through Wilshire Cabinet + Co), these showpieces are an Oklahoma favorite for when your kitchen needs a start to its show!

Introducing an interesting metal element or multiple mixed metal elements into your home does not mean you have to remodel. In fact, one Oklahoma metal fabricator can inspire you with many options that require no major construction at all.  Urban Ironcraft has been designing and fabricating fine iron products for over 15 years.  They work in both the residential and commercial arenas, but their focus is beautiful table bases, wine displays, fireplace screens and vanity bases.  They have an easy-to-navigate website that shows many of the creations that they have brought to life over the past years.  Custom is not a scary word at Urban Ironcraft, either. If you can dream it, then they are happy to talk about it with you.

As I often say, “Friends don’t let friends drink and design.” So put down that Quarantini and pick up the phone to contact one of Oklahoma’s talented design powerhouses to get started on adding a metal WOW factor to your next project!  Virtual meetings and digital mock-ups have made taking the first step easier than ever.

Cheers!
Travis
